RETRO REWIND: Fat Albert & The Cosby Kids

Updated: Aug 22, 2021

"This is Bill Cosby comin' at you with music and fun, and if you're not careful you may learn something before it's done. So let's get ready, OK? Hey, hey, hey!"

Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids was an animated show on CBS, every Saturday morning. Actually, where I lived, it was almost afternoon before it came on. Hosted by comedian, Bill Cosby, it was a program that brought Bill's childhood to life from September 9, 1972 to August 10, 1985.

I really, really loved this show. The main character, Fat Albert, and his buddies Bill, Bucky, Mushmouth, Dumb Donald, Weird Harold, Russell, and Bill's brother, Rudy, brought us all good and moral lessons through their weekly adventures.

The show was funny, touching, and thoughtful, all tied up in a tidy little package. A lot of life's lessons and the way we should act and conduct ourselves as solid human beings was taught and learned from this show. All of this good content helped us to overlook the not-so-great animation.

While most cartoons were and still are (even moreso these days) nothing but mindless goofiness, there was always something to learn from Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids.

By the time the half hour was over, you had been given something important to think about that would stick with you and make your life better. These are the kinds of lessons that stick in your soul for life.

It's hard for me to understand that NBC turned the show down because they claimed it was too educational. Oh, my! God forbid kids learn something while they're being entertained! Cosby and the production company, Filmation, then took the idea to CBS and the rest is history.

What a great show! HEY HEY HEY!!
